Last art walk, I was inundated with students taking pictures and writing about the art - O.K. they are students and are mostly nice people. Then I am hit up to spend an afternoon at a local school to give young students a pep talk about being an artist. I have to decline because I also have to work so that I can live here and make art.
After the artwalk, my email is inundated with solitation to buy cards, rebuild my website, other artist's websites - I think they thought I was running a gallery, buy art materials, etc.
And tonight I get a note at my door from some dude who wants to put a donation box in every unit during the artwalk for his pet project to raise money for LA Unified.
I'm not a hard-hearted person, am basically a nice person and I have personally worked with at-risk youth for many years.
But the artists do pay for the artwalk and many invest in setting up their studios for presentation. I have noticed that the people hitting up the artists are generally not the ones buying the artwork - they are not supporting the artists.
